I love this advice. I’m not a freelancer, but I think what you are talking about applies to everything and life in general. I’m just starting to realize this after just graduating college. No amount of planning will make up for doing stuff and figuring it out.

Superb post. I think planning and going by the books isn’t something that designers are necessarily likely to do anyhow.

I want to contest one point though. In my opinion, working diligently and extensively on your portfolio will pay off at some point. People get referrals by word of mouth but I get a large portion of inquiries based solely on my portfolio. So, don’t underestimate that component.

This is a great take on this subject. Very down to earth. It’s true, most people I know in the business/freelance world just did it, Including myself. I kinda had to as I was getting laid off from a job that was completely unrelated to what I do now. I could have either taken the leap, or, just gotten another ‘whatever’ job to pay the bills. I chose the former. And I can honestly say I’m so glad I did.

There’s been a steep learning curve, but I’ve managed to get some money in the bank and have some repeat business. I think the sensible advice out there is valuable, and should be taken into consideration. But there’s also something to just getting out there and making something happen.
