What a great, simple and refreshing way of looking at freelance business!
After all this talk of marketing strategies and what one has to do, this sounds just right.
Thank you for your eye-opening thoughts.

Really interesting, as a freelance translator I always guessed that, but never was able to express it so simple! Thanks for your efforts on this blog!

Absolutely spot on! And an excellent reminder for many freelancers who spread their energies too thin striving for quantity (large client portfolio) rather than quality (the right client portfolio).

Focusing on one's niche - and serving key clients within that niche - is a smart, and sustainable, marketing strategy. And one that let's you continuously hone expertise and positioning and broaden your relationship with those clients.

The trick is to have 10 true fans at any one time, and at all times, to ensure equilibrium in freelance income sources. That's where smart, targeted marketing and business development efforts, as well as referrals of course, make all the difference. Making those astute choices and having the courage to say "no" to a project or prospect that doesn't quite fit the bill pay off in the long run.
